Through The Eye Of The Storm

By Cholene Espinoza

Through The Eye Of The StormThrough the Eye of the Storm: A Book Dedicated to Rebuilding What Katrina Washed Away A pilot and reporter who has risked her life on the battlefield has taken on a new target-the human suffering experienced during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

Author Cholene Espinoza’s response to what she saw on a trip to Mississippi after the storm-and what she learned about herself-forms the basis for a book dedicated to rebuilding what Katrina washed away.

The book, “Through The Eye Of The Storm”, is described as a rallying cry for working Americans who survived the storm and an indictment of the public and commercial sources of assistance that failed them.

Espinoza details what she calls the seemingly insurmountable red tape and what she describes as barriers to assistance for people “who have no means to complain or demand better.” She sees her book as a story of loss and recovery, of the ravages of disaster and the healing power of community.

Noted journalist Helen Thomas describes the book as “the inspiring spiritual journey of a courageous woman who is dedicated to great human causes.”

Said Thomas, “We can all learn from Cholene Espinoza.”

Proceeds from the book will help to build and support a community/education center that will serve the Katrina survivors of Harrison County on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. It will provide young adults with GED, computer and other job training that will provide them with the skill to participate in the recovery of their community. Is will also serve the community as an after-school facility. It’s hoped the center will eventually provide health care services.

Currently a United Airlines pilot, Espinoza graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1987. In 1992 she became the second woman selected to fly the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft and was awarded the Air Medal for combat missions over Iraq and the former Yugoslavia. She is also a military correspondent for Talk Radio News Service and lives in New York City. Read More Reviews Here…

Biographies & Memoirs

By Cheryl Strayed

WildWild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail Wild was recently selected for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0. This book is not a hiking guide but a strong memoir that reveals the scary truth. The main story centers around a grueling 1100 mile hike done by a young woman all by herself. Not only did this hike break her down it was also able to bring her back to life.

After turning 22, the author Cheryl Strayed believed she had lost everything in her life. After her mother died she found both her family and personal life in a hot mess. After four years, she decided she had nothing nothing more to lose, so she decided to hike what is known as the Pacific Crest Trail. It stretches from the Mojave Desert, goes through the states of California and Oregon, ending in Washington State. She had never hiked long distances before and she wanted to do this hike all by herself. She was more interested in the prospect of being able to figure out her life as she hiked the trail.

On her solo journey she comes across rattlesnakes and even black bears. The weather is also unforgiving with periods of extreme heat and heaps of snow. As you read this book you will feel the suspense, the warmth and my personal favorite her humor. This book does a great job when it comes to accurately capturing the terror as well as and pleasures of Cheryl. You get to experience all her emotions as she hikes the and ultimately completes the trek ready to start living again.

Why would I recommend all the women around the world read this book. Well simply put, you need to read how Cheryl Strayed writes with brutal honesty. She even exposes not only her strengths but also her weaknesses. The book is well written, and does a good job at revealing this situation which is familiar to many women. However unlike those women she is able to write about it and make it real for everyone else.

I noticed that she does share a lot more about her sex life too, and some readers may not enjoy this. Personally, I did not mind as this was part of her life story and she was after all telling her life story. If you are one of those readers who gets too emotional you may want to skip the first few chapters, when her life is at its worst. Read More Reviews Here…

The Hunger Games

By Suzanne Collins

The Hunger GamesThe Hunger Games : You know they usually say that the movies they make do not do the book justice. This is another one of those situations when that is true. There was so much hype when the blockbuster movie was released, that as a human being I became very curious. It did not help hearing all the teens swear that although the movie is great the book was on another level. For the record, the movie is really good.

The Hunger Games is set in a fictitious country called Panem, which exists in the same area North America once stood. They are a total number of twelve districts that surround this nation. Often they engaged in war and and the districts always lost. In order to surrender they would have to each send a boy and a girl to participate in a yearly live reality TV like show called, “The Hunger Games”.

The main character is Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl who lives at home with her little sister Prim and mother. Prim is selected to represent her district but her sister Katniss replaces her in the game where out of 24 contestants only one lives and wins the game. It is a very fast paced game set in different terrains, the rules are constantly changing and they even allow the audience to participate. Get ready for an intoxicating life or death plot, that is full of drama and at times disturbing.

The author Suzanne Collins spent her younger years writing children television shows on channels like Nickelodeon. She is a New York Times bestselling author for another series of books, “The Underland Chronicles” that was written for the middle-grade age group. The Hunger Games is actually a trilogy, in which she tries to look at how war and violence affects our children. Although the book is targeted at teenagers, often times I found the story very brutal. Judging from her previous works, you would never expect her to write a storyline such as this one.

The humor was much appreciated too.Overall I found the book was written very well and I enjoyed the way she paced the story out. Although violence can be found in the book it is cleverly written so that it does not become too overwhelming. There are very short intimate scenes that are perfect for the younger readers. This is one of those books I found hard to put down once I started reading it. A great read especially for teen boys and girls, who are at least 12 years or older. Read More Reviews Here…

Mission To Paris

By Alan Furst

Mission To ParisMission To Paris: A Novel. This new 272 page novel is the latest in the series by author Alan Furst. The first one was released in the 90’s and since then over 12 other books have followed. It is no doubt that when it comes to the historical spy novel, Alan is the master. he is often often hailed as the best spy novelist the world has ever seen.

This book is set in the later part of the 1938 summer in Europe. The main character is actually a Hollywood film star named Fredric Stahl who we first meet while he is setting out to film a movie for Paramount France in the capital of Paris. The Nazis are aware of his arrival and they attack him. Unknown to them Fredric has agreed to spy for the Americans via their embassy in Paris.

Although there are many other characters, we always find Paris in the center of this story. Emphasis being made on the atmosphere and the lifestyle of the people who live in this bustling city in the years before the Nazi invasion. Unlike the previous heroes Fredric is not a member of the military or police he is a movie star. He is a decent guy, who is interesting to read about but often comes across as not being too intelligent.

As always, WWII era espionage novels written by Allan Furst are very entertaining. I was so fascinated by this novel that I found it hard to put down, so read it in one afternoon. As I read the book I did notice that Furst tends to caricature most of the German characters. Nevertheless, Mission to Paris is still a well written thriller. The way the book is written you feel like you are in that era observing as the characters try to understand their new world. The atmosphere certainly mimics that of that time period. Eat To Live

By Joel Fuhrman

Eat To LiveEat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss. The first Eat To Live book was published in 2003 and was recently revised for the 2011 edition. This new version now provides proof in the form of updates from the scientific research that was carried out to support the author Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s six-week ‘diet’ plan. It is important that you noticed that I put the word diet in quotations in the previous sentence. This is because this plan is more of a lifestyle change than the traditional diets that we have been exposed to in the past.

In the new chapter, he explores toxic hunger and how it contributes to people being addicted to food. You really get to dig deep into the what causes you to gain weight. Basically you can induce what he calls toxic hunger when you eat the wrong type of foods, and Dr Furhman shows you why this happens. Toxic hunger is responsible for making people consume more calories than they require. What I really enjoyed was reading about how to fight any cravings or addictions caused by toxic hunger to the junk foods that we should be avoiding anyway.

You can use the information contained in this book to help you live a longer and healthier life. You should also be able to stop relying on medication. He’s goal is to try help you change the way you eat for life and not just for a couple of days or weeks. This book opened my eyes to what I have been consuming. Some of the foods I should be eating that were missing from my diet as well as how certain foods were harmful to my health.

Who is Dr Joel Fuhrman M.D.? Well although he is now most commonly known as a best-selling author, he is also family doctor that is fully certified by the medical board. He has also been involved in research that is centered around prevention and reversal of diseases using natural methods, that include nutrition too. He has been featured on many radio and TV shows, including CNN and Dr. OZ as an expert on nutrition and natural cures. He has written a total of 7 nutrition books so far.

What I like about his plan is that there are no strict rules. You have a choice between a week of meals for vegetarians or a week for those who do not want to take on the vegetarian meal plan. His meal plans are based on actual science. This is a a life changing book, especially useful to those who are obese, who suffer from high blood pressure or are a diabetic. You will learn how to eat properly from now on.

The way Dr. Fuhrman looks at the positive side of a high nutrient per calorie diet is just common sense. He does take the time to explain each situation in many different ways to make it easier to understand what he is trying to say. The difference with other ‘diet’ books

If you are considering going on a diet you must read this book first. Now that I have read the book I am trying to follow the recommendations of Dr Fuhrman. Simple changes in my daily nutrition. Even if you are not considering going on a diet, I personally recommend that anyone who wants to live a healthy life reads Eat to Live. Read More Reviews Here…

By Glenn Beck

CowardsCowards: What Politicians, Radicals, and the Media Refuse to Say Just in time for the next presidential election the subject of this book is something that seems to be avoided in most of the debates taking place before the election. I am referring to the American people being told nothing but the whole truth regarding the major issues. The sad thing is that the truth is out there, however people do not want to hear it because it usually makes them uncomfortable.

The one time Fox News TV show host, Glenn Beck who is the author of Cowards targets thirteen serious issues. These are hot issues that no one else seems to want to tackle due to a variety of reasons. Things such as how having only two parties contesting the elections often results in the Americans not having any good options. Glen also exposes who the real George Soros really is, and his organization the Open Society Institute (OSI).

Glenn Beck, currently has a radio show that is syndicated radio and has written many other books in the past couple of years. He has had seven of them hit the #1 position on the New York Times bestsellers list. He is the perfect person to author this book as he is infamous for his defiance of what we call the norm for his whole career. As a result he has often been trashed and called bad names. There are quite a large number of people who do not like him and his views.

I would go as far as saying that this is probably Glenn Beck’s best book so far. I enjoyed the how in Cowards, the politicians are called out. It is refreshing how it takes important topics and breaks them down. This makes it easier for the reader to better understand the issues, as he tries to use simple, everyday English. For instance on page 17 he writes that “we are the mark — the sucker — in a national shell game….. It doesn’t matter which shell you choose or how many times you play or how closely you pay attention . . . The ball will never be where you think it is.”

This is a fast paced, easy to read book that has 50 or more pages of footnotes. It is formatted like a text book and may take a little while to get used to this effective format. I congratulate Mr Beck on his courage to write this book and I would recommend anyone with an open mind to read his book. When you finish reading “Cowards” make sure you pass it on to a relative, friend or neighbor. Read More Reviews Here…

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

By Stephen R. Covey

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective PeopleThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People :If you haven’t read “7 Habits” yet, it MAY NOT be time to read it now. I have noticed that you can’t or shouldn’t read it until you’re ready. Let me explain that:

I read it in 1993 when I was 20. If I had read it when I was 19, I would have gotten nothing out of it. To be honest, when I did read it, it really was an answer to my prayers.

There are concepts in this book that are so powerful, that even just reading them (without consciously putting them into action) changed how I live.

For example, I continuously found myself comparing what was happening in my life to what I had just read. If someone said an insulting thing to me, my initial feeling would be anger, but on the heels of that thought would come something I’d read in 7 Habits. I’d be thinking, “Hey! That reminds me of when Covey wrote about ___________.” And by the time that thought was gone, so was the negative situation.

Thinking became a whole lot of fun!

Even the first 3 Habits were enough to get me incredibly excited about interaction with others. You could live 1000 years and not come up with these concepts on your own.

The 4th habit was my favorite. It’s called “Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood”. I wish I did this more…now that I’m married! But back then, this helped me to become a very good “Speaker”. I could talk to people and help them not “drown for psychological air” around me. People want to be understood.

If you argue your point all the time, no one feels understood and ideas are harder to be put into action. ANY IDIOT CAN ARGUE! The whole world seems to place a huge importance on debate…and being able to destroy other people’s points of view with your logic and wit.

But that’s not strength. Like I said: any idiot can argue.

Not 1 in 1000 people can REALLY consider another person’s opinion as being the right one. Even fewer can actually stop and say to themselves: “I’m positive that I’m 110% right and that other person is wrong, but who knows? Maybe I am wrong. Let me consider their point and listen to what they need to express.”

Now that is real strength.

I once shared this concept with an opinionated individual.

They started yelling at me and saying I was wrong and that if you know you’re right, you need to stand up for yourself and prove the other person is wrong. With a grin on my face, I replied, “Maybe you’re right”. LOL! They didn’t even pick up on the fact I had just done to them what I was advocating.

It’s amazing what happens to people when you state back to them what you think is the point they’re trying to make.

You’ll end up starting a lot of your sentences with: “…so, what you’re saying is….”. Once you begin to show the person you’re not there to argue, their backs go down; the urgency in their voice drops; they calm down; and then they listen to your point without fighting.

As Covey explains, the best way to influence others is…to be INFLUENCED.

It’s such a good book and it’s filled with principles that will help you in all your dealings, but I find you have to be in a position in your life to put it into action. It will work great if you can practice it every day in a setting as:

-a family member dealing with difficult situations
-a manager
-a salesperson

…or anyone who needs to deal with people day-to-day. If you feel a strong need to know how to deal with others more effectively, maybe you’re ready for this book now. Read More Reviews Here…
